Physical Exams Q & A

Why do I need a physical exam?

A physical exam is an integral part of preventive medical care. When you see your provider for a physical examination, they have an opportunity to assess your overall health, check in with you about any ongoing medical conditions, and evaluate you for any new issues.

A physical exam is also a good time for you to discuss any questions or concerns you have with your provider.

It’s recommended that adult men and women have an annual physical so that new conditions can be detected in their early stages when treatment is most likely to be successful.

An annual physical can also ensure that you’re getting the right treatment for existing conditions that may have changed over the past year.

If your job has physical requirements, or if you work in a licensed profession, you may need to have a routine physical to remain licensed or employed. Many colleges also require students to have a physical each year.

What happens during a physical exam?

Your Victory Medical Clinic provider begins your exam by reviewing your personal and family medical history. They’ll ask you some questions about your general health, and discuss any new symptoms or specific concerns with you.

Next, your height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, and body temperature are recorded, and then your provider performs a comprehensive physical examination.

This involves feeling tissues with their hands (palpation), testing your reflexes, looking at your eyes, ears, and throat with an otoscope, and listening to your heart, lungs, and stomach with a stethoscope.

This exam assesses the health and function of the following:

  • Heart and blood vessels
  • Lungs
  • Lymphatic system
  • Ears, nose, sinuses, and throat
  • Digestive system
  • Nervous system

An annual physical typically includes blood work to check that your body is making enough red and white blood cells, test your cholesterol levels, and identify any nutritional deficiencies. Your provider may also recommend a urinalysis or additional tests.

What types of physical exams are available?

In addition to annual physical exams, the providers at Victory Medical Clinic are qualified to provide the following types of physicals:

  • Sports physicals
  • US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) physicals
  • Department of Transportation-commercial driver’s license (DOT-CDL)
